Nature in every expression
Meet the habitants of Xenotes
Mexico is a privileged place worldwide because of its diversity of flora and fauna, which is divided in all regions and natural sites within its large ecosystem. The Yucatan Peninsula is one of these areas, which consists of the states of Yucatan, Campeche and Quintana Roo; the latter has 22 amphibian species representing 95% of the species on the peninsula and 106 reptiles of which 17 are endemic. Birds and mammals concentrate represent the 88% and 96% of fauna in the peninsula respectively.
The Oasis Maya is part of this huge ecosystem, due to its location nearby Puerto Morelos, this is why in your next visit you will find some of these species. But first, let us introduce you these singular habitants of Xenotes so you don’t get caught by surprise when you run into one of them in this beautiful place.
The Toh Bird.
This singular bird is commonly known as the “clock bird” due to the movement of its tail. It can be found in the entrance of caves and sinkholes (better known as cenotes in the península of Yucatan). These places are where this bird builds its nests and you can watch it flying over the trees with its colorful feathers.
This little turtle can be seen day or night swimming in the waters of cenotes or ponds. Its alimentation is based in little insects. Did you know that the turtle is part of the mayan genesis and it represents longevity and wisdom?
This bird feeds on small amphibians like frogs, insects and small fish and it lives on the coasts and wetlands of Yucatan and Quintana Roo. It can be seen in areas of shallow water hunting fish with its spear-shaped peak. Take your camera and get ready because you could run into this beautiful bird during your visit. Something interesting about this bird is that the mayan culture considered it as a sacred animal.
These little flying mammals are inhabitants of the caves and in the Oasis Maya. They can be heard and seen in Cenote Lu’um. They feed on small insects and fruits. And they were also considered sacred animals for the Mayan Culture, they represented fertility and darkness.
This little mammal is one of the many that form the ecosystem of our zone. It lives in places where the vegetation is thick, where it hides to hunt its prey. The fox was also a part of the mayan zodiac, it represented a step of the maya genesis.
This little animal with friendly face is one of the habitants of the Oasis Maya. Its alimentation is based on fruits although they can hunt little insects. Many people can confuse them with some sort of racoon, but the coati is brown and has a larger nose. You can find it wandering in the jungle with its family (they have big families formed of at least 10 members).
As you can see the Oasis Maya is a place where nature and harmony are important part, where your adventure will make you disconnect from your routine and find a new way to connect with your essence. Where you can have fun and at the same time be aware that you are a part of this great machine that is our planet.
